Winter Fashion Tips: Change it With a Cardigan and Scarf

If I had to choose a favourite knit, it would have to be the cardigan. I love cardigans because you can delayer by midday if it’s warm, and you can easily layer with a scarf as the open neckline allows the scarf to hang down naturally.

Cardigans can come in a range of block colours, patterns and textures. I have thin knit cardigans for mild days and thick knit cardigans that can be buttoned up for when the temperature drops.

The thing about layering though is it can take up valuable time in the morning to dress. So I like to keep it simple and always have my basics on hand to create a simple layered outfit.

The base may be a pair of jeans and a white, grey or black t-shirt. Long sleeved if it’s fairly cold.

Basics are important because they are the foundation for your showpony pieces (as Nikki Parkinson would say). And the showpony pieces in this instance are the cardigan and the scarf.

Here are three ways I’ve worn the same base of a white singlet, jeans and boots, yet I’ve created 3 different looks by changing the scarf and cardigan.

In this outfit I’m wearing the Arrowheard Rust Cardigan from TOBI (gifted) with a plaid blanket scarf. This is the type of outfit I’d wear if it was really cold outside.

In the next outfit, I’ve simply changed the cardigan to this pink cardi from Dotti with a witchery scarf.

And the third outfit is another change in cardi with this black maxi cardi from Katies and a Rockmans scarf.

If I wanted too, I could have use the one scarf with each of the cardis.

Having the right basics allows for more outfits to be created. I know this style of outfit works for me and I can delayer at midday when it’s warm outside. The layers are added by the afternoon as the sun goes down and the temperature drops.

My favourite cardigans are the ones that have pockets and are roomy so layers can be worn underneath. If your cardigan is too tight, it can feel uncomfortable and will gape at the bust when done up. (writing from past experience)

I will always reach for a cardigan before a jacket when I’m at home. I find cardigans are more snuggly and a jacket is more suited for going out.

What do you reach for in winter, a cardigan or jacket? Do you like the cardigan and scarf look?
