Makeup Review – Waterproof Mascara For Watering Eyes

I’ve tested a number of different makeup brands over the last two years. I’ve mainly used natural brands to see if it made any difference to my watering eye.

After my MRI scan confirmed makeup was NOT the cause for my leaking eye, I needed to find a waterproof mascara for watering eyes that would give me volume, but wouldn’t smudge or clump.

I asked a work colleague, who is also a trained makeup artist, on what she recommended. She remembered my eye watering during our training and I was not aware of what was causing my eye to puff up and water back then.

She recommended Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara. It wasn’t in my price range… however I have tried many waterproof mascaras and they have smudged under my eye or the constant watering has washed it away. Sometimes price has to come out of the equation when you find a product that does all that you need after the failure of many.

As luck would have it, I was sent Myer gift cards for my Birthday and on my first child-free and work-free day, I went to Myer to get the mascara. While there, I also bought a lipstick, which glides on like a lip balm and the colour is amazing.

The Verdict

I think I’ve found a winner with this mascara as it doesn’t smudge, lengthens my eyelashes and is still on my eyes at the end of the day. It’s was worth the investment.

As for the lipstick, it wears off after a few hours, but it was described as a lip balm than a lipstick. I’m used to wearing a tinted lip gloss, so the Rouge Coco Flash by Chanel is a great in-between product from going to lip gloss to lipstick. It is easy to glide on and moisturising to my lips. I’m wearing colour 96 Phenomene.

I’ve never owned any Chanel makeup as I tend to go to my local pharmacy and buy Revlon or Maybelline. I can see the difference between the brands though.

Have you got any waterproof mascara recommendations? Ever tried Chanel makeup products?

Why Cardigans are my Favourite Knit to Wear

I recently bought some new cardigans to add to my wardrobe for winter.

i love cardigans

On a few cool days last week, I was wishing for a thick knit to snuggle into.

But thick knits don’t get much of a wear in a Brisbane winter. I tend to stick with jackets and cardigans which can be layered on and off as the temperature changes throughout the day.

And so, instead of looking for jumpers, I started to look for a few more cardigans to layer over my Gorman t-shirts.

I tend to buy block colour knit cardigans because they go well with patterned tops I already own.

Here are a few of the patterned cardigans I came across in my online search.

cardigans on research

1. Katies Long Sleeve Textured Block Cardigan $30 (on sale)

2. Gorman Oscar Cardigan $159.20 (on sale)

3. Katies Block Cardigan $40 (on sale)

4. Elm In Transit Cardi $119

5. Gordon Smith Colour Block Cardi $109

6. Gorman Tetris Effect Cardigan $119.20

I found Dotti to be the best value for money for cardigans and their sale was too hard to refuse. I went into store and was surprised at how roomy these cardigans were. They are an oversized, oversized fit. I walked away with a medium, but I could have got a small.

Dotti cardigans I tried in store (currently on sale) Dotti Lover Cardigan in Seafoam $41.96, Dotti Pia Cardigan in Mustard and Red $41.96

I purchased a red and mustard cardigan in the same style, as I knew it would work with many tops in my wardrobe. I also know from experience, mustard is a fast seller.

Some reasons why I love cardigans:

• They can be layered on and off throughout winter
• They are a trans-seasonal knit
• Can work with jeans and top, skirt and top or dress outfits.
• You can have a few to create different outfits, with the same base outfit underneath
• Can layer with a scarf easily
• Can cover your bum and keep it warm

Are you a fan of the cardigan? Or do you prefer jumpers instead?

Birthday Shopping: It’s My Birthday and I’ll Shop if I Want to!

I celebrated my Birthday last Tuesday. But if I’m honest, I’ve been celebrating my Birthday WELL before the big day arrived, with a variety of packages being delivered to my door. Birthday shopping is something I do well. And I’ve done very well these past weeks leading up to my Birthday. I thought I’d share what I bought, with some links, in case you feel like buying a gift for yourself too. 😉

First purchase… was new pyjamas and slippers. I needed some new winter PJ’s and slippers. I’ve always been a fan of Peter Alexander, but sometimes it can be a bit pricey. I waited for a sale to get these. The slippers are amazing on. So soft and cosy and the spot pyjamas are awesome because the pant bottoms don’t ride up my ankle when in bed. It’s the little things.

Peter Alexander Pyjamas ($27 for pants only) and Rose Gold Home Boots (on sale for $49)

Purchase 2: Long Sleeve Winter Dress

Next was this dress from Birdsnest. I had my eye on it when I compiled a list of long sleeved winter dresses to wear during the cooler months. I was going to wear it on my Birthday… but I couldn’t wait and wore it sooner. I’m glad I bought the 16. It’s a tighter fit.

Purchase 3: Faux Fur Leopard Jacket

We are heading to NZ in September, so I had been watching Nikki, from Styling You, Instagram feed for ideas on where to eat. At the same time, I loved her faux fur leopard jacket. The one she had sold out in my size, but I found a budget friendly one from Salty Crush. I’ve worn it a few times since I got it. It’s so beautiful to wear. Can’t wait to take mine to NZ too.

And that’s all I bought for my Birthday. I’ve been sent vouchers to spend too, so the shopping may continue yet. Will share those in a future post. 😉

Do you go Birthday shopping for yourself? Got anything on sale lately?

Where to Buy Faux Fur Leopard Print Jackets

I’ve shared quite a bit of leopard print on the blog and it doesn’t seem to be waning as Faux Fur Leopard Jackets have been a popular piece to acquire.

Ever seen someone wear something you love at first sight? You research the net to find one just like it, only to find the one you love wasn’t in your price range, or it had sold out?

I loved the look of Nikki’s (from Styling You) faux fur leopard print jacket and went to find one similar… only to find it was out of my price range and sold out in my size.

So I went on the hunt to find one.

I may wear it once per winter but I do have an up and coming New Zealand trip. It may come in handy on that trip.

I thought I’d compile all my research into a blog post with listed sizes available.

A leopard print faux fur coat is a stand out piece that can be an added layer on a variety of outfits. I’m going to team mine with a black dress and black pleather skirt. Watch this space for how I style my jacket when I get it for my Birthday. 

Where to Buy Formal Dresses for Black Tie Events

From July to the end of the year is the season for awards nights and events requiring black tie attire. I recently had a question about where to buy formal dresses for black tie events, and in effect, this post will share my answer.

Where to Buy Formal Dresses for Black Tie Events

where to buy formal dresses for black tie events

1. Sheike

2. Forever New

3. ASOS

4. Birdsnest

5. Swankstore (for Maxi Kaftan Robe Style Dresses)

6. Myer (my picks are Brisbane City and Carindale)

7. One Honey Boutique

8. City Chic

Tips on Choosing a Formal Dress for a Black Tie Event

When choosing a formal dress for a black tie event, the gown is generally floor length. It’s important to choose a dress that you can sit, stand and dance in comfortably. If the dress is too tight or too loose, you will feel self-conscious all night.

If you attend a few black tie events each year, it can cost a fortune buying a new dress for every event. Glam Corner offers a formal dress hiring service. Alternatively, choose a dress in a classic neutral colour like black, navy or even blush and change the accessories to create different looks.

Winterising Your Formal Dress

For formal events in winter, add a faux fur wrap to keep shoulders warm. A cropped jacket can also work. Forever New and Alannah Hill have some gorgeous faux fur wraps that will work with any of the dresses below.

I’ve found some gorgeous styles currently online, which can be accessorized and worn again and again. My go-to is always black or navy, but a block colour option works well too.
