How to Change Up Your High Rotation Outfits

If you’ve gravitated to wearing the same outfits week in and week out, you’re not alone.

Isolation and feeling blue with all that has been happening in our world the past 6 months can certainly impact the way we dress.

For some, the dopamine outfits come out in full force to cheer ourselves from the outside in.

But most days, it can feel a bit like groundhog day and reaching for the outfit worn yesterday or last week helps us get on with our day. It’s one less decision to make and it’s a sustainable choice too.

If you’ve felt convicted about the environmental impact of adding clothes to your wardrobe each season, you’re not alone with that conviction either.

Where do our old clothes end up? What is the cost of constantly adding more to an already bulging wardrobe? What are the social and environment impacts to our consumerism?

For the last 6 months, I’ve felt uninspired with clothes.

You may have noticed my lack of posts on Facebook and Instagram because of this.

I work in insurance so the change affected me late last year when bushfires were hurting so many.

It was difficult to share a new outfit without thinking of those who had lost all they owned and literally escaped for their lives with the clothes they were wearing.

And then COVID19 hit our shores and isolation meant nowhere to go, no one to see.

I was able to reflect on my motivation creating outfits was around where I was going and who I was going to see.

Feeling comfortable and looking put together each day did help with my internal mindset though. But I simply wore those same outfits again and again.

Minimalist posts have been popping up in my Facebook newsfeed and the conditions of where ‘cheap’ clothes have been manufactured would make me want to do better.

But Australian made clothes didn’t attract me either and the costs to acquire aren’t always in my budget.

I’ve felt like I’ve been caught up in a contradictory argument that I can’t win.

So the best plan of attack was to wear what I already owned and to wear them week in and week out.

And so the inspiration for this post came to be on how to change up your high rotation outfits.

Much of what I share with you is what you may already know. But the difference will now be acting on it the next time you reach for the same outfit you’ve be strutting out every week.

5 Ways to Change up Your High Rotation Outfits

1. Wear a statement earring

As you know I LOVE a statement earring. Statement earrings can add something new to an outfit. You may forget you’re wearing the same old outfit when your statement earrings take the stage.

If you don’t have any statement earrings, why not support a local business and invest in some gorgeous clay earrings. I got some for my Birthday and just LOVE how they match my outfit.

2. Swap the bottoms

If you always gravitate towards jeans as your bottoms, why not change it up with a ponte pant, slimline tracksuit pant or skirt? Layer with leggings if it’s winter, and in summer opt for shorts, culottes or a pinafore.

3. Add in a pattern

If your favourite go-to outfit is jeans, a block-tee and cardigan/jacket, swap the block tee with a pattern.

Patterned tops add interest to an outfit. I often resort to a stripe, polka dot or leopard print if I want contrast. If I want pops of colour, I will wear a Gorman tee.

4. Change your scarf

In winter, a scarf can instantly change an outfit. Swapping scarves can create multiple outfits. Leopard print scarves will work with most outfits. If you always reach for the leopard print, try an alternate animal print like zebra or a spot scarf.

5. Introduce textures and layers

If you have a gorgeous boho blouse and jeans outfit, layer with a faux fur vest or teddy jacket. The same can be added to a maxi dress.

Vests in various textures and lengths can be layered over simple jeans and top outfits and dresses. Have one or two of these in your wardrobe. They can certainly add interest to a boring long sleeve top and jeans outfit.

6. Create a personal styling challenge

Many of us have spent time decluttering our wardrobes. You may have discovered items in your wardrobe you haven’t worn or have hardly worn. Make a personal styling challenge to wear those pieces within your high rotation outfits.

For example, I have many scarves. I could make a challenge to wear each scarf I own for the next 30 days to change up my routine wearing the same outfits.

If you’re not great at making your own challenge, follow a challenge on Instagram. When you’re in a rut, a challenge can motivate you to change up your outfits.

Swap Your Denim Jeans For Coated Leggings – Here’s How

Coated leggings are definitely a pant to consider adding to your winter wardrobe.

Since March, I have been looking for coated jeans to extend my winter outfits.

I often resort to denim jeans or black leggings when the temperature turns cool.

Many of us have embraced the soft pant for comfort over the last few months while isolating at home.

But I wanted to add something new which could work with all my knits and jackets this winter.

I love the look of a coated legging because it can work well at home with sneakers, a tee and cardi for a casual look.

Or it can be dressed up with a shirt, jacket and boots when going out. I like to have unlimited choices when I add a new basic to my wardrobe.

Tips when purchasing coated leggings/coated jeans

Check if there is stretch. This will determine if you purchase your current size or size up.

I usually go up a size because coated jeans are usually a skinny fit and I don’t want the waist band to be digging into my belly.

I also check the measurements for hip, waist and length.

I find any types of coated pants will sell out quite quickly in the larger sizes. So when they are available, I want to be confident with the fit so I don’t have to swap or risk not being able to swap because my correct size sold out.

Outfit ideas

Like your normal denim jeans, coated jeans are just as versatile. They can come as a jean style, legging or jegging. Here are some outfit ideas to inspire. Wear with:

  • Striped tee, white sneakers and cardi for a layered look
  • White blouse and high heels for a work or evening look
  • Block colour knit and black boots for a smart casual day or night look
  • White tee, denim jacket and sneakers for a casual day look
  • Tops that drape or do a tuck and drape look with a blouse to show off your shape.

For me, I always will wear a top that can drape around my hip area to camouflage my lower tum and possible camel toe.

Statement Rainbow Macrame Earrings

I love a statement earring. And we all know the digging I get from my dad when he sees the tassels and pom poms adorned from my ears.

Well check these beauties out!

I discovered the Atelier Macadabra Instagram account while searching for a rainbow dress. And I loved the statement rainbow macrame earrings at first sight.

After a bit of online scrolling, I realized the earrings were made in Quebec, Canada. I did try to find an Australian made equivalent, but they weren’t as colourful or big in design.

While the earrings can be made to order, a new release of designs are uploaded to Etsy and they are snapped up quickly.

I can understand why. They are gorgeous and unique and who doesn’t want to have rainbows hanging from their ears?

My rainbow earrings have even motivated my eldest daughter to get her ears pierced so she can wear them one day.

I wore mine with a new tee I bought from Gorman, one that doesn’t sit cropped on the hip. I’ve been removing tops that don’t fall below the hip.

What I Bought With My Feelings

The past couple of months have been strange and unusual.

Our household has experienced a range of feelings from joy and happiness with everything being cancelled, to overwhelm and despair because everything was cancelled.

Changing to at home learning brought out the most emotions – mostly from me as I navigated three different curriculums. I had to block out mornings to spend time with my Preppie because her attention span was limited, as was my patience.

I loved having the girls’ home and we embraced online learning with a positive mindset. But I will admit it wasn’t easy.

My expectations of how I thought online learning would be delivered were different to what was set out. I had moments of frustration when three kids would ask me questions at the same time and I’d have no idea who to help first.

And so by afternoon, I’d sit with my feelings and do some online shopping. A parcel delivery would be a welcome surprise to my day.

I thought I’d share some of the items I bought with my feelings during that time. The intent with my purchases was to help Australian businesses which is more important than ever right now.

What I Bought With My Feelings

Arlington Milne Guitar Strap from Add To Cart

I bought my own Mother’s Day gifts this year with the money I’d have given the girls to spend at the school Mother’s Day shop. I may have given myself a larger budget. 😉

But I had been eyeing these guitar straps from Add to Cart and they would always sell out in the vintage tan.

A restock meant I received my guitar strap before Mother’s Day and I’ve been wearing it with my Wanderer’s Crossbody bag ever since. (The one I bought is no longer available)

I love the colours and it makes my bag look unique. The strap is easy to wear on the shoulder too.

It’s a unique gift idea for that person who has everything. You can also get different colourways. Check out ones still in stock here and here.

Karla Cola Rainbow Dress

I’m not sure how I stumbled across this dress, but it was most likely while scrolling Instagram.

It was really a matter of scrolling at the right time and place because I was able to purchase this dress right on its release.

I knew I’d be able to wear this dress all year round, plus it didn’t require ironing. There was a small problem with the initial purchase of this dress, but that got fixed.

I know it won’t be my last Karla Cola purchase. But you do have to get in quick because the dresses sell out quickly when released.

Frankie 4 Pink Gabbie Brogues

I’ve been meaning to add brogues to my footwear apertoir in anticipation to winter. I mainly have boots and I wanted a flat closed in shoe to wear.

My size was limited with the available brogue styles at the time, but I did add these blush pink brogues to my wardrobe. A video by Nikki from Styling You encouraged wearing supportive footwear at home while we worked.

The brogue is a lighter colour to what I’d normally choose and I won’t be able to wear them with bare legs. But they are so comfortable to wear and they add a winter shoe option when wearing jeans.

Black and White Knit from Lionheart

While I do love to wear colour, I did love the look of this Sleepa Knit from Lionheart Clothing.

what I bought with my feelings Sleepa Knit

A free shipping sale meant I added this jumper to cart.

It’s one of the softest jumpers I own and I know I will get a lot of wear out of it this winter. It’s a knit that can be worn casually with jeans, or dressed up with a pleather skirt and boots.

Neon Cherry Rylee Frill Skirt in Red Spots

I bought this skirt at the beginning of isolation and what a joy it was to receive and wear.

wearing red rylee skirt

Again, it’s a skirt that can and will be worn all year round. There are limited sizes left, but it is on sale. It’s 100% Australian made and you can tell that with the quality of the skirt.

And those are just some of the items I bought while at home.

Maybe I should make this a series because receiving parcels is fun!

Did you buy anything with your feelings during isolation? Discover any new online stores?

Basic Tops That Cover a Tum and Bum

I love tops that have a longer hemline and cover a tum and bum.

While I don’t want the top to swamp me like a tunic, a bit of length instead of a cropped style is my preferred basic top to wear. Do you like the same?

It can be hard to find basic tops that cover a tum and bum, but I have found a few retailers and brands which have tops available with these requirements.

I have bought these tops from Sussan (last winter) and their lengths have been perfect.

For shorter tops, I tend to wear a longer singlet underneath to add extra length to cover my tum.

Brands which I’ve found offer a basic top which covers a tum and bum include

  • Sussan
  • Taking Shape
  • Betty Basics (available from Birdsnest and other online retailers)
  • ELM (available from Stylefast, Birdsnest and other online retailers)
  • Neon Cherry
  • PQ Collection (available from Birdsnest and other retailers)
