How to wear Distressed Jeans

I have been wanting a pair of distressed jeans for ages but I withheld buying any last year while I was pregnant with Phoebe.

While I have been trying to work off my baby weight, I have avoided buying new pants but after Kimba suggested I get a cheap pair of distressed jeans to keep me through, I decided I would find a cheap pair of jeans and distress them myself.

But there was no need.

I had to go into Target to get some baby stuff and there was a sales rack so I decided to have a look and would you believe there were distressed jeans for $10!! So I snapped them up straight away.

Here I am in Sydney with Phoebe where I wore them to Colour conference.

I love the relaxed style of the boyfriend distressed jean but I also like the skinny style too. You can wear your distressed jean just like any other jean – casually or smart casually. If you want a dressed up look add a sequin jacket or some sort of bling and heels.

Here are some fashion ideas on how to wear distressed jeans.

And I have scoured the internet for these distressed jeans that you can add to your wardrobe.

Are you a fan of the distressed jean?

How to make hand me downs work for you and your wardrobe

Some would argue that hand-me-downs are one of the best ways to acquire new clothes and they are a great way to enhance an existing wardrobe for free. And I agree, so long as the clothes that you receive are ones you would wear and suit your personal style.

But there is an underlying guilt that gets attached to hand-me-downs. Sometimes the receiver feels they must keep what they’ve been given because it would be wrong to offload this generosity somewhere else.

Firstly, I best explain what hand-me-down clothes are. They are the clothes that your mum, sister or girlfriend no longer wear, can’t fit into or don’t like anymore. If you are a mum, they are more commonly known as the clothes you keep for future or current siblings to wear. Hand-me-downs work well for kids because it saves money and as a mum I like to get the best wear out of little clothes because children grow so fast.

When it comes to adulthood, hand-me-downs can work for you or against you.

To make them work for you, you have to sift through what you are given and ignore the urge to hang every hand-me-down in your wardrobe. Especially if you don’t even like the clothes, or they don’t fit your properly.

The gems worth keeping from a hand-me-down pile include

  • Clothes that fit you or have the ability to be altered to fit you
  • Clothes without pulls, marks, stains or fading
  • Staples like white shirts, block colour t-shirts, jeans, fitted jackets that fit you well
  • Clothes that fit with your personal style or can be worn with something already in your wardrobe that is your personal style.

Hoarding hand-me-downs is a wardrobe nightmare and I have done wardrobe analysis on clients who have kept every hand-me-down because they haven’t worked out their personal style. Factors like , having no money in the bank to purchase new clothes and feeling guilty in passing the clothes onwards to someone else can cause one to hang on to hand-me-downs.

The next time you are given a bag of hand-me-downs, don’t hoard the contents and fill your wardrobe with clothes that don’t suit you. Keep what you like and fits you well, and then pass them on to someone else who could use them.

Style it Project: Falling Flowers Kimono

So I’m a bit late with this post. This feature piece for the Style It Project was for last month. It was to style the Bohemian Traders Falling Flowers Kimono. The Style It Project is run by Redcliffe Style and Kimba Likes where they choose one outfit of clothing that we can style for the month. This outfit is going to be on rotation during Autumn and Winter.

As you know I am a cape/kimono fan and have quite a few on rotation in my wardrobe. I also wear my scarves as kimonos so I can add variety to my current collection.

Just before Christmas I bought myself this red Paisley Rouge print Kimono which I was a little apprehensive in purchasing because it seemed to be a big size and I have to be careful swamping myself with too much fabric or else I look like a circus. I purposefully bought it to be worn over a red and white stripe short sleeve dress to cover my arms, but the dress revealed a bit too much of my jelly belly! Instead I teamed the kimono with my striped red tee and Katies Capris.

The drape in the kimono wears beautifully and I love mixing it with stripes or worn by itself over a white nursing singlet and cinched in with a belt.

Unfortunately after I wore this particular outfit I got covered in poo because my Phoebe did a huge poonami! I’m looking forward to wearing it more than five minutes next time I wear it again.

Ever worn a nice outfit and then get covered in poo or some other random substance your kid decides to wipe on you?

How to make the Bohemian Traders Oversized Striped Tee Dress Breastfeeding Friendly

Finding breastfeeding friendly clothes can be hard. I think it’s much easier than it used to be, but it can still be hard. Especially if you fall in love with a dress and know that you can’t wear it for 12 months or however longer you choose to feed your baby.

When I’m breastfeeding and I go buy new clothes, I want to wear them NOW.

When I saw Bohomian Traders had a red stripe oversize tee dress, I really, really wanted to buy it.

But I didn’t because when I saw the front I knew it wasn’t breastfeeding friendly.

Or so I thought.

The best part about having a mum that reads my blog, is she knows what shops I like and she takes tips from the advice I dish out on the blog and on instagram. Sometimes I need to be reminded of my own advice!

On Christmas night I was DELIGHTED to receive the Bohemian Traders Oversize Striped Summer dress. I was even more excited when my mum had read the detailed description that the dress had a lengthy zip at the back.

Remember when I shared how I wore this dress back to front on Instagram?

Well the same thing can be done with this dress. I like to bring the zip down a little to create a v-neck and tuck the corners in to cover over the Bohemian Traders label.

It is so easy to throw this dress on and tend to my babes.

And when I stop breastfeeding, I can wear it how it’s meant to be worn.

But I may revert back just to mix it up a little.

How many Bohomian Traders pieces do you own? Do you have your stripe dress yet?

How to turn a Boxing Day Sale purchase into a worthwhile investment

Last year I abstained from going crazy at the Boxing Day sales.

We did head to the newly refurbed Westfield Garden City because we were given Myer gift vouchers for Christmas and wanted to get a Bose Sound Dock. The sound dock we wanted had sold out, but we were directed to the Hub where we could use all of our vouchers to pay for it and free delivery was included.

First thing Monday morning (Boxing Day was Friday), we received our sound dock and we’ve been using it every day since.

That kind of Boxing Day purchase is a worthwhile investment because not only was it on sale so we saved money, it was something we wanted and would use every day.

The same can be said for fashion purchases.

So many women get crazed by a sale and hoard so many clothes… but is it necessary? It’s Boxing Day Sale Madness!

I only wanted one top from Sass & Bide that I have been waiting patiently to go on sale. The moment it did go on sale with over a 50% saving, I still chewed on the purchase.

In the end I made the decision to buy the top and I’m glad I did because I love it and it’s a great tran-seasonal piece.

Sass & Bide Boxing Day Sale Top

The top is a boxed shape and is almost crop like but the sides angle beautifully to create extra coverage. I love the vertical lines and the hint of mustard in the print.

In winter I can see myself layering it over a black or white long sleeve top and in summer worn over a black tank top with shorts or capris.

This top is very much a worthwhile investment to my wardrobe and probably one of my most favourite Boxing Day sale purchases to date.

Do you shop in the Boxing Day Sales? Did you grab a bargain if you did? Please share the details in the comments below. 🙂
