Pockets of my Home

In the last month or so, I have spent quite a bit of time at home with the girls. Even when Esther was on school holidays, we spent a bit of time at home playing, watching movies and trying to enjoy each other’s company.

After spending so much time at home since having kids, I’ve often been quite critical about how I style my home. I don’t like having random stuff around the house. I have a hutch that I place all breakables and antique vases in, so they are away from the kids. But the items I do keep out are pieces that have been purchased on a budget from department stores, which I don’t necessarily mind if they get broken accidentally.

Thankfully my girls have avoided touching these pieces even though they are within reach.

At the beginning of the year, I shared a post on 40 ways you can change the interior of your home and it’s a great post to go to if you haven’t got much spare cash and need to change the look of a room.

I’ve made a few subtle changes to our living, dining and main bedroom and thought I’d share them with you if you’re feeling like making a change to your living space.

Our TV cabinet is the hardest surface to style. My girls climb on top of it, so the back corners are the safest place to put a pile of books and terrarium or a tray with a mix of different things.

First time putting some items together for a round tray.

I love my $6 Kmart plastic tablecloth, although if cleaned vigorously, the spots will rub off. I put our Peace Lilly in the middle of the table on top of a round table mat. I’m still surprised how well our Peace Lilly is growing.

In our bedroom, over Christmas and the new year, I had a mix of grey and gold cushions on the bed. To change it, I added in more black cushions and a purple throw and matching cushion, still keeping a little of the gold and grey. No need for a fur rug on the bed when our dog Bentley likes to jump on and sleep at our feet during the night.

For my mind’s sake, if the beds are made and the TV cabinet and dining table is clear of mess, I don’t get overwhelmed by the mess in the rest of the house. Often a trail of toys and little bits and pieces can be found from my girls’ rooms into the living room and into our bedroom.

I try and remind myself that I don’t live in a display house, I live in a family home and everyday there will be mess.

All I can do is control the areas I can and remember to be grateful to have a family to provide a shelter for.

Have you made any subtle changes to your home now that Autumn is here? How do you put your mind at ease over the mess your kids create in your home?

18 Places to Buy Affordable Art

When I shared 40 ways to change the interior of your home, I had two questions about where to source affordable art. Ironically, Jacob and I have been looking at various online stores to find the perfect wall art for our dining room. We ended up getting our bright ‘Rosato’ painting from The Block Shop and the price included framing!

After our research, I came up with 18 places to buy affordable art. All of these places were used in my initial research. I also share a technique that has helped me discover new artists. I really believe in supporting local artists (if you can afford to). You’re usually guaranteed with a unique artwork and it feels good supporting someone else’s creative pursuits.

18 places to buy affordable artwork

18. Kmart – Again, limited prints available, but it’s budget friendly and you can afford to change the art each season.

If I can’t find anything I fancy from these places, I usually search through the hashtage #wallart on Instagram and this has helped me find artists I wouldn’t have known before.

Hello to a New Blog with an Interiors Section!

Last week I decided Styled by Bec needed a website make-over and required to be converted to a blog, with a page offering my services as opposed to my services being front and centre instead of the blog.

What do you think?

I’m excited by it because I’ve opened up a few new categories to share about on this space which include Lifestyle, Beauty and Interiors.

My role as an editor for a fashion and lifestyle website inspired me with some blog post ideas that would work on my blog, hence why I opened up the interiors section on the blog. You can read my first interiors blog post about how to incorporate colour into your interiors here.

I’m always a sticky beak when it comes to seeing how people decorate their homes. I’m not sure if the love developed when dad and I started our domestic plumbing maintenance company and we’d walk through different homes to do our job.

There are a few blogs that focus on the interiors of one’s home, but not many that look at how one store’s their clothes, and this will become a new series called In Her Wardrobe where I share the state of someone’s wardrobe and get them to share about what they love in their wardrobe – or maybe what they don’t like.

I’m also going to offer a service exclusively for women who want their wardrobe completely sorted out and organized. We sadly live in times where buying new clothes has become a habit, but if our wardrobes are organized and have clothes that we love, we won’t cry in our wardrobe complaining we have nothing to wear.

If your wardrobe is already in working order, I would LOVE for you to contact me so I can share it on the blog. Send me a comment below or message me via my contact form. If you need your wardrobe completely culled and sorted out, you can get more details here.

So what do you think of the new blog? Have you made a change this year that you’d like to share?

Ways to Embrace Colour in Your Home

I love bright and bold interiors. Whenever I see colour, I’m immediately attracted to a space.

While I very much appreciate neutral colours, I will choose a bright coloured space over muted tones any day.

I find that I dress similarly to this as well. I love bright and bold prints and colours in clothes and accessories. Wearing colour and seeing colour makes me happy.

It’s with this in mind, I’ve found some ways embrace colour in your home – no matter your interior style.

I think colour is a fun way to add personality to your home and it can work well, providing you choose the right pieces and colours.

If you shy away from colour, why not choose a block coloured item and see how it changes the feel of your space? Dip your toes and be adventurous and see if that coloured piece brings a smile to your face each time you see it.

ways to embrace colour in your home

Embrace colour by adding a block coloured chair or lamp. Use cushions to tie it all together.

The easiest way to add colour to a neutral room is to add artwork, cushions and a throw. Rather than have everything match, add an accent colour (the blue cushions) to break it up.

A block coloured bedside can add colour interest to a neutral schemed bedroom.

A bright coloured door, is an easy way to add colour to your entryway.

Cushions and bright, patterned sheets can lift a monochromatic look.

Here are some colour décor pieces you might like to add to your home if you want to add some fun to the interior of your home.
