#shopwhatyougot Challenge – Second 10 days of outfits

Can you believe how fast this year is travelling? I can’t believe we are at the end of November, which means near the end of the #shopwhatyougot challenge. If you want to see what outfits I put together for the first 10 days of the challenge, check out this post here.

The next 10 days saw me wear some new items.

shopwhatyougot22014

Included in this 10 day capsule wardrobe were

2 pairs of print pants

1 pair of Black Harem pants

1 pair of denim shorts

4 tops

1 Navy Stripe Dress

1 Khaki Shirt Dress

1 Navy Nursing Dress

1 Bohemian Traders Oversized T-shirt Dress

1 Bohemian Traders Boheme Dress

1 Ruby Yaya Maxi Kaftan Dress

All that I added to the capsule wardrobe for the last 10 days were 1 pair of patterned pants, 1 black nursing tee, 1 Navy Stripe Dress, 1 Bohemian Traders Boheme Dress, 1 Kaftan Maxi Dress and 1 Kaftan top. Scarves and necklaces aren’t included in the 30 pieces.

In the first 10 days I wore 13 items of clothing and after the last 10 days I’ve only added 6 pieces, which brings the total amount of pieces worn within 20 days at 19 items.

The key to making this challenge work is having a few dresses in the mix and having pants and tops that can intermix with each other.

The next 10 days will be interesting because I have a trip to Melbourne this weekend and we all know the weather can have all four seasons in 1 day. Wish me luck.

How are you going with the #shopwhatyougot challenge?

#shopwhatyougot Challenge – First 10 Days of Outfits

I have been taking part in the #shopwhatyougot challenge which means I have to wear outfits from a capsule wardrobe of 30 items for 30 days. I decided to tackle this challenge a little differently by choosing a certain amount of clothes from my restriction of 30 items. For the first 10 days I put aside the following clothes:

1 Khaki Button down Dress

1 Navy Nursing Jersey Dress

1 Maxi Kaftan Dress

1 Oversized T-shirt Dress

1 Pair of Denim Shorts

2 Pairs of Black Harem Pants

6 Tops in a mixture of prints and colours.

Shopwhatyougot2014first10

Accessories aren’t included in the clothing tally. I have a total of 13 items that I wore in the first 10 days which leaves me with 17 pieces to add to my capsule wardrobe.

The reason I tackled the challenge this way is because I am going to Melbourne at the end of the month and I have no idea what clothes I will need for our 2 night getaway, so having some flexibility with adding warmer clothes into the mix is a wise move I think to keep within the challenge rules.

For me the interest for each outfit is added with an accessory. My mum recently came back from Dubai and brought back some fantastic scarves that I love wearing. I’ve been adding them to these outfits.  The cape in the last picture was also given to me from my mum because she found it dragged on the floor when she would wear it. It fits and drapes on me perfectly. Thanks Mum!

I found the challenge fairly easy for the first 10 days so I’m eager to see how I go for the next 10 days.

Are you taking part in #shopwhatyougot? Do you like the concept of a capsule wardrobe?

Liebster Award for Styled by Bec

I’ve seen the Liebster Award do the rounds in the blogosphere for quite a while and my blog The Plumbette has been nominated a few times but I’ve never gotten round to participating because I found it hard trying to find 10 new blogs to nominate as most of the new blogs I would come across had been nominated already.

So I was surprised to see another nomination for the Liebster Award and I thought what? AGAIN? But I soon realized it was the lovely Shannon from How can I wear that nominating my Styled by Bec blog. And I was nominated last week again by Nicole from The Builder’s Wife.

Styled by Bec has never been nominated for an award and I was pretty chuffed to have received a nomination for this little blog.

For those that don’t know what a Liebster Award is – it’s an award given to bloggers, by fellow bloggers as a way of recognising your blog and a way to connect and discover other fabulous blogs in the blogosphere.

A few rules that come with the nomination are:

  1. Link back and recognise the blogger who nominated you.
  2. Answer ten questions given by the nominator.
  3. Nominate ten other bloggers for the award.
  4. Create ten questions for nominees to answer.
  5. Notify your nominees.
  6. Get an award button and display it proudly.

Here are Shannon’s questions and my answers.

What is your favourite texture combo? I love a cotton with lace. I don’t think I play with texture enough so this question has inspired me to be a bit daring with my texture choices.

If you had a spare $1000 where would you spend it? I would try and tick off a few things on my bucket list like going to an exclusive restaurant and putting the funds towards a designer handbag purchase.

What was your favourite subject at school? English and Geography were my favourite subjects at school. They were also my best subjects.

Do you have any pets? Yes, we have a dog called Bentley who is 7 years old. He’s a brilliant guard dog but thinks he’s king of our castle. Maybe because we treat him as our first baby and he’s used to being pampered.

How would you describe yourself in three words? Outgoing Strong Friendly

Styled By Bec Awards550

Leather or pleather? Both. Leather when I have funds, pleather when I want champagne on a beer budget. 😉

If you could invite any two people to dinner (living or dead) who would it be? Gosh, this question has me stumped. I’m not sure who I would have over for dinner. Maybe Ellen and Oprah because I would love to hear about their journey to success and what celebrities are really like off screen.

What is your favourite decade, fashion wise? I don’t really have a favourite decade, but I do like to draw inspiration from each decade to create new outfits to wear now.

What is your dream job? Anything that involves helping people. I enjoy styling, but I also love blogging too. I enjoy plumbing when solving problems and advising clients on a solution.

Who is your favourite character from the television show Friends? Joey, because despite his goofiness, he was funny.

My nominations are a mix of favourites and a mix of new finds.

Boho Australia Giveaway

Congratulations Chloe Barber the winner of this giveaway.

When I went to the Instyle Boutique VIP night, I had my eye on a Boho Australia Kimono Kaftan. I loved the print and knew it would be a great summer piece to wear while I’m breastfeeding Phoebe.

The day that I eyed it, I was meeting up with family for coffee and I didn’t have time to try it on.

Thankfully, I didn’t purchase it that day because I ended up getting 20% off the price at the VIP night.

Anyways, I got a lot of comments on Facebook and Instagram when I wore this Kaftan with white Katies Capris. It’s safe to say that you guys like this Kaftan too, so I purchased TWO of them so that I could give one away on the blog. The Kaftan is called Born for Bling which makes it sound like the perfect Kaftan to wear this party season. It is an embellished kaftan with beading at the neckline.

O

The one I’m giving away is white and it’s a one size fits all so it would be a loose flowing fit on a size 8 and more fitted on a size 16-18. I’m a size 14-16 at the moment.

This is what the Kaftan looks like on a hanger.

O

And here it is on a model from Tee & Me who has sold out of this Kaftan.

In order to enter the giveaway, all you have to do is follow the Rafflecopter prompt and tell me where you would wear it or where would you like to wear it? The most creative answer will win the Kaftan.

A confession

I have a confession to make. One that many stylists and fashionistas would gasp in disbelief. That confession is…

Vogue does nothing for me.

The horror of such a confession, but it’s one that I will happily admit.

When I was doing my Diploma in Fashion Styling, I subscribed to a number of magazines for research and to keep in the fashion loop. Vogue Australia was one of my subscriptions.

But as I flicked the pages I realized none of the images meant anything to me. I remember reading my first Vogue magazine front to cover and chucked it on the magazine pile uninspired and confused.

Wasn’t fashion meant to be easy, fun and inspiring? Not weird and over the top?

The magazines I did get a lot from were InStyle and Shop till you drop because they showed how trends on the runway could be incorporated into my wardrobe. But some items still cost more than my weekly pay and at the time I worked to pay for a mortgage and lifestyle, not to fill my wardrobe! Now I don’t work and there is little money left for extravagant purchases.

But looking good does cost money. Whether you op shop it or stick to the sales.

Essentially if you get your wardrobe basics right, there is little need to be wasting money on clothes you’re not going to wear.

These days I don’t have time to stand in my wardrobe and work out what to wear. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this. We’re mums or we work (or both) and we want to look great when getting the groceries or taking our kids to playgroup. And it’s not because we don’t want to feel judged about what we wear (although I do hear this happens at the school drop off gate). It’s more that when we look good, we feel good. I love despite having had a crappy night’s sleep, I go to playgroup and one of the mothers tell me they love my top/outfit/necklace or whatever.

I’ve started taking pictures of my daily outfits since Phoebe was born to show how different looks can be achieved by wearing the same clothes. I hope this inspires you because there is much more to style that spending a month’s worth of mortgage repayments on a brand of clothing that you may not get a lot of cost per wear.

Some labels are worth every penny spent on them, but others are tragic purse depleters.

If you are looking for inspiration whether you’re a mum or a busy corporate who nails it with the suits at work but has little idea in the casual department… I’m your stylist.

I’d love it if you could follow me on Facebook or Instagram. I will upload photos of what a stylist (me) wears day to day to give you inspiration on how to create a stylish casual wardrobe.

Since becoming a mum, my style has changed and I’m enjoying the journey of working out what I like and what I don’t like.

Clothes are one way we show our personality to others, so the more we understand our style, the more we learn about ourselves.

Tell me are there any fashion magazines on the market that you don’t ‘get’?
