How do you deal with a public fashion faux pas?

One of the things that I looked forward to the most when entering my senior year of high school was the design and wording on my school jersey.

I had no idea what to put on the back of my jersey. We were allowed to have anything written on the back so long as it wasn’t illegal.

There was a lot of pressure in deciding what phrase or word was to be typed on the back of the jersey. I deliberated over ‘Jonesy’ (my high school nickname after my maiden name) or ‘Beckles’ the name my grandma would call me.

And then my drama teacher suggested I put ‘doyagetit?’ because it was the phrase I would say when telling a joke and I loved to tell jokes.

So I filled in my form and asked for ‘doyagetit?’ to be printed on the back of my jersey.

I thought it was so cool until one day when I was wearing it, I had my hair down and a friend teased me that I was asking for tit because all she could read was ‘tit?’ I laughed it off and couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought about the spelling and what the jersey would look like with the words running together.

I wonder if Natarsha Belling felt the same way when social media went ape about her ‘penis’ neckline jacket. The jacket was by Scanlan Theodore, and is a popular jacket among newsreaders with Eva Milic and Melissa Downes sporting the same style but in different colours.

Sometimes a fashion faux pas isn’t noticeable until someone points it out. The most embarrassing and icky faux pas are when g-strings are visible above a pant waist or patterned underwear worn beneath a see through white dress.

How do you deal with a public fashion faux pas?

The best way to deal with a fashion faux pas is to laugh it off. To prevent it from happening, always check the mirror before you leave home. And carry a scarf because it can camouflage or draw attention away from the problem area.

I reckon Natarsha would have loved a scarf around her neck last Sunday night.

Do you have a fashion faux pas story to share?

Maggie T Autumn Winter Collection Showcase

On Saturday I went along to the Maggie T Autumn Winter Collection showcase at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. My mum was modelling the latest styles in store and I went along to take photos and to check out the new range.

I don’t shop at Maggie T. My mum does and she could probably open up her own boutique with the amount of Maggie T clothes in her wardrobe. But I have worn on occasion Maggie T pants, shirts and scarves during my pregnancy to now. In fact this wrap is from Maggie T.

The attendees were aged 50+ and a mixture of different sizes. Maggie T is an older brand, but if you flip through their catalogue, there are some really on trend pieces that I would wear as a 30 year old. I’ve always said keep an open mind when shopping for clothes and don’t diss a store because it’s too old or too young. You never know what you will find.

Maggie T Icon of Style

The new Autumn Winter collection features monochrome patterns, animal prints and chartreuse. My favourite outfit was a chartreuse vest worn over a zebra print top. I convinced mum to get a chartreuse jacket. She loves wearing monochrome and I explained the chartreuse jacket would be a great way to add colour and it would go with pretty much everything in her wardrobe. It would also mean I could borrow it if the need arose….

Maggie T offer clothes from a size 12 to 24. If you become a Maggie T Member you can get some great savings until the 15th March.

While I was taking pictures, Phoebe had a great time interacting with the staff, models and attendees.

Ever been surprised by the clothes in a store that you don’t usually shop in? Do you like chartreuse?

What I wore Christmas Day – Adrift Bahama Chilli Dress

I bought three dresses to wear for Christmas Day. I know crazy and indulgent. I usually buy two – one to wear on Christmas Eve to church and another to be worn on Christmas Day.

The dress I intended to wear was a red Firefly dress which fit me well except around my belly. Such a bummer about the fit, I emailed the online shop where I purchased the dress from to see if I could swap the Large for an Extra Large, but because the dress had been featured on Styling You, it had sold out.

Not to worry. I still wanted the dress and I know that when the baby weight starts to drop off, the dress will fit me perfectly.

The next dress I bought was the Ahoy dress from Bohemian Traders but there were no large sizes left so I got the medium and although it fit me well too – that little pot belly decided to stick out again!

The third and final dress was the Bahama Maxi Dress in Chilli from Adrift. I have had my eye on it for a while and when it went on sale, I snapped it up. Unfortunately the same dress is no longer available, but this is a similar style if you are interested. There is enough drape and V-neck to allow for breastfeeding too.

I love the colours in the dress and the cross-over at the bust makes it very breastfeeding friendly.

So friendly it revealed a bit too much of my cleavage so I wore a black nursing singlet underneath for modesty and teamed the dress with my gold and black sandals from Tony Bianco which I bought last season.

I got this photo outside so you could see the colours in the dress.

A multi- coloured dress like this can be accessorized quite easily. I could have opted for some fine jewellery, or costume jewellery and I chose the latter to make more of a statement for Christmas Day.

This selfie shows the necklace I teamed with this dress.

The dress drapes in all the right places and camouflaged a Christmas Food Baby very well. 🙂

Boho Australia Mint Aztec Knot Maxi Dress Giveaway

I did say I would find another dress to giveaway on the blog and Christmas is the perfect time to hold another giveaway. I always indulge myself by buying a dress or two for Christmas.

One of the most liked dresses on my instagram feed is this Maxi Kaftan dress from Boho Australia. I decided to give one away on my blog too. 🙂

Bec in Boho Australia Dress

It’s a one size fits all type dress that will fit a size 8 – 18. You will need to wear a slip underneath it or your togs. The sleeves have open slits which make it very cool to wear in Summer. You can also breastfeed in this dress as there is enough drape in the fabric to pull the V-neck down for boobie access.

I’m wearing the pink pattern of this maxi kaftan dress, but I’m giving away the mint colour which I think would look stunning to wear at any type of do on Christmas day.

Wearing the same cocktail outfit TWICE

When I got the official invite to the Kidspot Voices of 2014 Gala Cocktail event, I was excited. I wanted to go because my other blog, The Plumbette, had made the top 30 in the Personal and Parenting category and I wanted to celebrate that achievement by attending the Gala event.

After resurrecting my styling blog, I knew readers would be interested in what I would wear to the event. I wondered Should I approach brands to dress me for the occasion? Do I go and purchase something new? I did neither.

Instead I chose to wear the same outfit I wore to the Annie Sloan Cocktail party back in August and hoped no one would remember. There were only a handful of bloggers that would have been at both events to have remembered anyway.

What got me worried about my decision to wear the same outfit was reading the status of another fashion blogger the gorgeous Sonia from Sonia Styling revealing she was being fitted for her outfit. But then the lovely Rebecca from Seeing the lighter side of Parenting revealed her dress in a blog post a week before the event and that calmed my outfit anxiety because her Wayne Cooper Dress was in the same alignment as my outfit.

I decided to wear my black jumpsuit from Millers with the borrowed bolero jacket from my mum that is apparently from Maggie T.

O

I upped the anti with the jewellery wearing Oroton Chandelier earrings and a crystal necklace and bracelet. My silver mesh clutch completed the look. My shoes were Easy Steps black wedges.

I met up with Kirsten from Kirsten and Co as we cabbed together and she also wore a jumpsuit to the event. Her jumpsuit is from Autograph. It’s like Jumpsuits are the trend for the season! (Which you knew anyway because I wrote about them in August. :))

O

I got Jacob to take photos of us before we got into our taxi. I was a bit envious of Kirsten’s updo. It looked fabulous.

When Kirsten and I arrived, the red carpet was rolled out, there was a random voice talking in the background which I then understood to be one of the Ford cars. It was easy to skim across the room to find recognizable faces. Everyone was dressed superbly for the occasion.

I got my make-up done at the Benefit bar in Myer. I watched a make-up demonstration by Rachel from Redcliffe Style last week and she used Benefit mascara. I saw the Benefit bar adjacent the lifts in Myer while Jacob and I waited to go up to Level 6 to view the Melbourne Giftorium late Friday afternoon.  It was a spur of the moment decision to get my make-up done, but I’m so glad I did… because I didn’t expect to get my photos taken.

O

O

It was a fantastic night. It was made even better by winning two of the sponsor challenges. The announcements were so unexpected. I actually get goosebumps writing about them now. To read more about who won what, head here.

I’m glad I wore what I did at the awards. As soon as I got back to the hotel room, I was on the bed feeding Phoebe.

I’ve always been one to buy a new outfit to a new event or occasion, but clothes need to be worn more than once – even the special occasion clothes. Wearing the same cocktail outfit twice didn’t hurt my bank account or my reputation.

Are you prone to buying a new outfit every time you go to a new event? Do you have a go to outfit when going to cocktail parties?

I’m linking up with Kimba Likes for Wardrobe Wednesday.
